cozy campfire hot dogs - featured image

A simple and nostalgic recipe for roasting hot dogs over a campfire, served with fresh, crisp toppings and toasted buns for a perfect smoky and juicy bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 all-beef or favorite variety hot dogs, preferably natural casing
  • 8 soft hot dog buns, brioche or classic white
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened (for toasting buns)
  • Crisp iceberg or romaine lettuce leaves, washed and dried
  • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 small red or white onion, thinly sliced
  • Dill pickle slices or relish
  • Mustard (classic yellow or spicy brown)
  • Ketchup
  • Optional toppings: sauerkraut, jalapeños, shredded cheddar, avocado slices

Instructions

  1. Prepare the fire or grill to medium-high heat (about 375°F/190°C) with glowing embers, not large flames.
  2. While the fire heats, wash and dry lettuce, slice tomatoes and onions, and lay out pickles, mustard, and ketchup. Butter the inside of each bun lightly.
  3. Spear each hot dog with a long skewer or roasting fork. Hold about 6 inches above embers, turning every 1-2 minutes until evenly browned and juicy, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Toast the buttered buns on a grill rack or near the fire edge until golden and crispy on edges but soft inside, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Assemble hot dogs by placing each roasted hot dog in a toasted bun. Add lettuce, tomato slices, onion rings, pickles, mustard, ketchup, and any optional toppings.
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy hot.

Notes

Use natural casing hot dogs for the best snap. Rotate hot dogs every 1-2 minutes to avoid burning. Butter buns before toasting to prevent sogginess. Keep a spray bottle of water handy to control flare-ups. For gluten-free, use gluten-free buns or wrap hot dogs in large lettuce leaves. Dairy-free butter can be used for toasting buns.
