A quick and easy recipe for a silky-smooth, deeply comforting hot chocolate that feels like a warm hug in a mug. Perfect for cozy moments and busy cold mornings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk (or 2% or dairy-free milk like oat or almond)
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-processed)
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons sugar (granulated white or brown sugar)
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ounce (30 g) dark chocolate chips or chopped chocolate (optional)
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pour 2 cups (480 ml) of whole milk into a saucepan. Warm over medium heat for about 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally until hot but not boiling.
  2. In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 to 3 tablespoons of sugar, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Gradually whisk the dry cocoa mixture into the hot milk, whisking vigorously for 1 to 2 minutes until smooth and glossy.
  4. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and the optional 1 ounce (30 g) of dark chocolate chips or chopped chocolate until melted and velvety.
  5. Transfer the hot chocolate to a blender or use an immersion blender in the pot. Blend for 20 to 30 seconds until frothy and creamy. Alternatively, whisk vigorously for 1 minute to incorporate air.
  6. Pour into mugs and serve immediately. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows and optionally dust with cocoa powder or cinnamon.

Notes

Do not boil the milk to avoid scorching or skin formation. Blend briefly for a frothy, cafe-quality texture. Adjust sugar to taste. For dairy-free, use plant-based milk and dairy-free chocolate chips. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 2 days and reheat gently.
