A quick and easy recipe for crispy, crunchy shrimp coated in a creamy, spicy Bang Bang sauce, made healthier and mess-free using an air fryer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound medium-sized raw shrimp, peeled and deveined (tail-on or off)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (60g)
  • ¼ cup cornstarch (30g)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten, room temperature
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (100g), Japanese style
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooking spray for air fryer basket
  • For the Bang Bang Sauce:
  • ½ cup mayonnaise (120ml), full-fat or light
  • 3 tablespoons sweet chili sauce (45ml)
  • 12 teaspoons Sriracha or hot sauce (5–10ml), adjust to heat preference
  • 1 teaspoon honey or sugar (5ml)
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar or lime juice (5ml)

Instructions

  1. Pat the raw shrimp dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  2. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and cornstarch.
  3. In another bowl, lightly beat the two large eggs until smooth.
  4. Place panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl; optionally add a pinch of smoked paprika or garlic powder.
  5. Dip each shrimp first into the flour mixture, shaking off excess, then into the beaten eggs, and finally into the panko, pressing gently so the crumbs adhere well. Set coated shrimp on a plate.
  6. Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  7. Spray the air fryer basket lightly with cooking spray. Arrange shrimp in a single layer without overcrowding. Spray tops with cooking spray.
  8. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 4-5 minutes, flip shrimp, spray again, and cook for another 4-5 minutes until golden and crispy.
  9. While shrimp cooks, whisk together mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, Sriracha, honey, and rice vinegar until smooth. Adjust heat and sweetness to taste.
  10. Once shrimp are done, toss gently in the Bang Bang sauce or drizzle sauce on top. Serve immediately for maximum crispness.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to avoid steaming the shrimp. Pat shrimp dry before breading for best crispiness. Use gluten-free flour and panko for gluten-free version. Sauce can be made up to 3 days ahead and stored in fridge. Reheat leftovers in air fryer at 350°F for 3-4 minutes to regain crispiness.
