Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 beef or pork hot dogs
  • 12 soft hot dog buns, lightly toasted
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce (240 ml)
  • 1 cup beef broth (240 ml) or vegetable broth as substitute
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (about 200g)
  • Optional toppings: diced onions, jalapeños, mustard, relish

Instructions

  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and brown 1 pound of ground beef for 6-8 minutes, breaking it apart until no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add finely chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef; cook for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  3. Transfer the beef, onions, and garlic mixture into the crockpot.
  4. Pour in 1 cup tomato sauce and 1 cup beef broth; stir to combine.
  5. Mix in chili powder, cumin, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper; stir until evenly distributed.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally if possible.
  7. About 15 minutes before serving, lightly toast hot dog buns and warm hot dogs by boiling or grilling.
  8. Assemble by placing hot dogs in buns, spooning chili over each, and topping with shredded cheddar cheese and optional toppings.
  9. Serve buffet-style for easy self-serve game day fun.

Notes

Do not add cheese too early to avoid oil separation; add cheese just before serving. Toast buns lightly to prevent sogginess. If chili thickens too much, stir in broth or water to loosen. For a smoky flavor, use smoked paprika or a dash of liquid smoke. Leftover chili tastes better the next day after flavors meld.
