A quick and easy crowd-pleasing meal featuring rich, tomatoey sloppy joe filling served on crunchy, buttery garlic bread slices. Perfect for casual gatherings and busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter option)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce or passata
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: pinch of chili flakes
  • 1 large loaf Italian or French bread (day-old works great)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced or pressed
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the garlic butter: In a small bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, and a pinch of salt. Mix well and set aside.
  2. Make the sloppy joe filling: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef or turkey and cook, breaking it up, until browned and no longer pink (6-8 minutes). Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until onion is translucent and soft (3-4 minutes).
  4. Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning as needed.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice bread into 1 to 1½ inch thick slices.
  7. Spread a generous layer of garlic butter on one side of each bread slice. Place slices buttered side up on a baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden and bread is crispy but soft inside. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
  9. Assemble sloppy joes: Spoon a hearty amount of sloppy joe filling onto each garlic bread slice. Serve open-faced or add a second slice on top for a sandwich.
  10. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Make sloppy joe filling ahead and reheat gently with a splash of water or broth. Use day-old bread for better toasting. Watch garlic bread closely to avoid burning. Swap ground beef for turkey or plant-based meat for lighter or vegetarian options. Use gluten-free bread and dairy-free butter alternatives for dietary needs.
