Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced (Vidalia or other sweet variety recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup mayonnaise (240 ml)
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt (120 ml)
  • ½ cup sour cream (120 ml), full-fat recommended
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional but recommended)
  • Salt to taste (start with ½ teaspoon)
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped chives or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice 2 large sweet onions, about 5 minutes.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat until foamy.
  3. Add sliced onions to the skillet, stir to coat with butter, and cook slowly over medium-low heat for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until deep golden brown and sweet-smelling.
  4. Transfer caramelized onions to a plate and let cool to room temperature.
  5. In a medium mixing bowl, combine 1 cup mayonnaise, ½ cup plain Greek yogurt, and ½ cup sour cream; stir until smooth.
  6. Add 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, salt to taste, and ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper; mix well.
  7. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the creamy base; adjust seasoning if needed.
  8. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let flavors meld.
  9. Just before serving, garnish with finely chopped chives or parsley.

Notes

Caramelize onions slowly over medium-low heat to avoid bitterness. Chilling the dip for at least 1 hour improves flavor and texture. Can caramelize onions a day ahead and refrigerate. For vegan version, substitute mayo and sour cream with plant-based alternatives and use olive oil instead of butter. Avoid microwaving leftovers to prevent separation.
