These spooky yet delicious jalapeño poppers are wrapped in flaky puff pastry to resemble mummies, making them the perfect festive appetizer for Halloween or any gathering. They offer a perfect balance of spicy, savory, and creamy flavors with a satisfying crunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (17-ounce) package puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 68 large jalapeño peppers
  • 8 ounces full-fat cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 stalks green onions, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds (black or white) for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Wash and pat dry jalapeños. Slice each pepper in half lengthwise and scoop out seeds and membranes using a spoon or melon baller.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, green onions, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth.
  4. Spoon the cream cheese mixture into each jalapeño half, pressing gently. Place filled peppers cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Unroll puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface and cut into 1/2-inch wide strips.
  6. Wrap each filled jalapeño with pastry strips, leaving some filling exposed at the bottom. Trim excess pastry.
  7. Attach sesame seeds or small dough pieces to the top of each mummy to create eyes.
  8. Brush the pastry strips with the egg wash.
  9. Bake for 15-18 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and puffed, and the cheese is bubbly.
  10. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

For less heat, remove all seeds and membranes from the jalapeños. For more heat, leave some in. If the pastry browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil for the last 5 minutes. These can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerated before baking.
