A fun, mess-free way to serve customizable ice cream sundaes in individual mason jars, perfect for parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

  • Vanilla ice cream (about 1.5 quarts / 1.4 liters)
  • Chocolate ice cream (1 quart / 0.95 liters)
  • Strawberry or another fruit-flavored ice cream (optional)
  • Mini chocolate chips (½ cup / 90 grams)
  • Chopped nuts (½ cup / 60 grams), like pecans or walnuts (toasted for extra flavor)
  • Rainbow sprinkles (⅓ cup / 55 grams)
  • Fresh cherries or maraschino cherries (1 cup / 150 grams)
  • Crushed cookies or graham crackers (½ cup / 50 grams)
  • Chocolate syrup or hot fudge sauce (½ cup / 120 ml)
  • Caramel sauce (optional, ½ cup / 120 ml)
  • Whipped cream (store-bought or homemade, about 2 cups / 480 ml)
  • Fresh fruit slices like bananas or strawberries (about 1 cup / 150 grams)
  • Mini marshmallows (optional, ½ cup / 50 grams)
  • Shredded coconut (optional, ¼ cup / 20 grams)
  • Small to medium-sized mason jars (8-12 oz / 240-350 ml capacity) with lids

Instructions

  1. Chill your mason jars by rinsing and drying them thoroughly, then place in the fridge or freezer for about 15 minutes.
  2. Prepare your toppings by arranging them into small bowls or ramekins. Chop nuts, crush cookies, and slice any fresh fruit.
  3. Using an ice cream scoop, place about ½ cup (120 ml) of ice cream into each jar. Smooth the top gently.
  4. Add toppings in layers: sprinkle a tablespoon of your favorite toppings over the ice cream layer, such as mini chocolate chips, crushed cookies, and chopped nuts.
  5. Repeat layers if jar size allows by adding another small scoop of ice cream and more toppings.
  6. Top each jar with a generous dollop of whipped cream, drizzle chocolate syrup or caramel sauce, and add a cherry or sprinkles.
  7. Seal jars with lids and store in the freezer until ready to serve.
  8. Remove jars from the freezer about 5 minutes before serving to soften slightly. Optionally, place jars in warm water for 20 seconds to loosen ice cream.

Notes

Keep ice cream as cold as possible until assembly to avoid melting. Pre-portion toppings to reduce mess and overwhelm. Dry jars and lids thoroughly before sealing to prevent condensation. For dairy-free or vegan versions, use plant-based ice creams and whipped cream alternatives. To soften ice cream quickly before serving, place jars in warm water for 20 seconds.
