A quick, healthy, and flavorful meal featuring lean ground turkey seasoned with smoky spices, served in crisp lettuce wraps for a low-carb, satisfying dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground turkey (lean, preferably 93% lean)
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup (60ml) low-sodium chicken broth or water
  • 1 head butter lettuce or iceberg lettuce, leaves separated
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • ½ cup (120g) shredded sharp cheddar or Mexican blend cheese (optional)
  • ¼ cup (60g) plain Greek yogurt or sour cream
  • Fresh cilantro leaves, chopped
  • 1 small avocado, sliced
  • Fresh lime wedges

Instructions

  1. Dice the onion and tomato, mince the garlic, chop the cilantro, and separate the lettuce leaves carefully to avoid tearing. Slice the avocado and set wedges of lime aside for serving.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onions and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Crumble the ground turkey into the pan and cook until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it into small pieces with a spatula.
  5. Sprinkle chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper over the turkey. Stir well to combine and coat the meat evenly with spices.
  6. Pour in ¼ cup (60ml) chicken broth or water. Reduce heat to low, cover the pan, and let simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  8. To assemble, lay out a lettuce leaf and spoon in a generous amount of turkey filling. Top with diced tomatoes, shredded cheese if using, a dollop of Greek yogurt, slices of avocado, and sprinkle with chopped cilantro.
  9. Squeeze fresh lime juice over the top and serve immediately.

Notes

Cook turkey over medium heat to avoid drying out. Adding chicken broth keeps the meat moist. Use butter lettuce for soft yet sturdy wraps. For dairy-free, omit cheese and sour cream and use guacamole or coconut yogurt instead. Leftover turkey filling can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated gently with a splash of broth.
