A comforting, easy-to-make apple crisp with a crunchy oat streusel topping. This recipe uses simple pantry ingredients and a mix of tart and sweet apples for the perfect balance of texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 Large Apples (mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 1 Cup Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats
  • 1 Cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Cup Packed Brown Sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter, Cold and Cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt. Toss to coat evenly and let sit for 10 minutes.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine rolled oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  4. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry topping ingredients. Use a pastry cutter, forks, or fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized clumps.
  5. Pour the seasoned apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  6. Sprinkle the oat streusel topping over the apples, covering the entire surface.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges. If the topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil.
  8. Let the crisp cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.

Notes

Keep the butter cold for the best texture. Use a mix of apples (Granny Smith for tartness/structure, Honeycrisp for sweetness/softness). Let the crisp cool for 15 minutes before serving to prevent a soupy filling. For gluten-free, use GF flour blend and certified GF oats. For dairy-free, use vegan butter.
