These spooky yet delicious crispy witch finger cookies are a perfect Halloween treat. Featuring a shortbread-like texture with realistic almond nails, they are easy to make, crowd-pleasing, and fun to shape.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Slivered almonds (for nails)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, beat softened butter and granulated sugar on medium-high speed for 3-4 minutes until pale and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Cover dough and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Take a 1-tablespoon piece of dough and roll into a log, tapering one end to resemble a finger.
  8. Use the back of a knife or toothpick to press deep wrinkles into the dough.
  9. Press a slivered almond into the rounded end to create a nail. Add a tiny drop of water or egg wash if needed to secure it.
  10. Cut a small slit under the almond to simulate the nail bed.
  11. Place cookies on prepared baking sheets, leaving 2 inches between them.
  12. Bake for 12-15 minutes until edges are golden brown.
  13. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  14. Dust lightly with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

Ensure butter is softened but not melted. Chill dough thoroughly to prevent spreading and maintain shape. Rotate baking sheets halfway through baking for even browning. Cookies can be frozen unbaked or baked for up to 3 months.
